Greylock Backpacking trip


Ready for another 6 Peaks of New England Rocker? We are headed to Mt Greylock in June. We will stay at Mark Noepel Shelter on Friday and then on Pecks Brook Lean To on Saturday. These are some great shelters near/on the AT in western MA. This is a great way to bag our home state's highest peak. 

Highland Games at Nantucket

Troop 1 will be attending the Highland Games camporee at Nantucket on May 13-15. The trip will have us depart by ferry from Hyannis to Nantucket on Friday at either 2:45pm or 8:00PM and departing to Hyannis by noon on Sunday. This will be fun event, centered around Scottish lore and friendly clan competition (there may be some bag-pipes and kilts involved).

WHEN: May 13-15, 2022

STAYING WHERE: Camp Richards, Nantucket Island

MEETING WHEN: Meet at Nativity at 11:30AM for departure no later than 11:50AM

AGENDA: Meet at Church at 11:30AM and drive together to catch the 2:45PM Steamship Ferry.

We will hike 2 miles to Camp Richards with our Troop and Clan Flags. We will settle in for the
night. On Saturday we will have a full day of activities. We will return on Sunday on the 12 noon
Steamship.

Participant Cost: $50 per scout, $50 first adult per household

Fort Ticonderoga

Fort TiconderogaWhere did George Washington get all those cannons anyway? Join Troop 1 this April and find out! We'll be visiting Fort Ticonderoga, which had a role in both the French and Indian and the Revolutionary Wars. The cannons that George Washington used to liberate Boston came from Fort Ticonderoga. The fort is an outstanding example of a Star fort. The Troop will be participating in the "Planting the Tree of Liberty Program". This includes: 

● A Musket demonstration
● Practicing formation tactics
● Working with tools under supervision
● Learning about tents and constructing a brush shelter
● Working on fatigue duty alongside Fort Ticonderoga's interpretive Staff
● Guided Tour of Carillon Battleground

We'll be staying at Camp Wakpominee, on the south east end of Lake George. We'll visit the fort on the north end of the lake on Saturday.

Worcester Railers Game

Troop 1 is headed to the DCU Center on Saturday March 19th to catch the ECHL hockey game between the Worcester Railers vs Newfoundland Growlers hockey game. We'll meet at the DCU Center for the start of the 7:05 game. If there is enough interest, we can get group tickets (so we can sit together) and perhaps even grab an early dinner before the game. Tickets are around $27 plus fees per person, we will settle the cost once we get closer to the event.

 

Berkshire East Skiing Trip

On March 12 Troop 1 will take a day trip over to Berkshire East for some skiing and riding. We'll meet at the Churchof Nativity at 6:40am and head over to the mountain. Please bring your breakfast or eat beforehand. The lodge will have food for purchase, or pack your own. The cost for individual tickets is variable but if we have enough participants we can secure a fixed reduced group rate. Please sign up by Wednesday March 9th so we may order our tickets 48 hours in advance.

Jerimoth Hill

On March 26 Troop 1 will re-visit the ardous summit of Jerimoth Hill in Rhode Island. Ok. Ok. Ok. So Jerimoth Hill is not in the same ball park of Mr Greylock, Washington and Katadin, but it is the highest point in the Rhode Island and it is part of the 6 Peaks in New England. We will camp at June Norcross Webster Scout Reservation. We'll take the short trip to Jerimoth Hill on Saturday. The rest of the weekend will be spent simply having fun, learning Scout Skills and enjoying the early days of spring. Cost is $10 per participating scout/adult. Date is March 25-27.

Apex Bowling

Set em up, knock them down. Troop 1 is starting off 2022 with a fun night at the APEX Center to go bowling. Please arrive, in ClassB, at the lanes to get your shoes and get ready to start bowling at 7:30. We'll have the lanes for an hour. Please meet at the APEX Center for 7pm and pickups no later than 9pm.

Please note: that per BSA guidelines masks are required. We won't be ordering food, but will have water/cups.

Webelos can bowl on Troop 1. If adults want to bowl, please sign up so we register the right number of bowlers. If you just want to watch, no sign up needed.

 

Freeze Out

 

The troop is attending the Mayflower Freeze Out on Feb 4th-6th 2022. The Freeze Out is full of winter fun and outdoor skills to include:

  • Scouting skills
  • Cold weather camping/Winter survival skills
  • Patrol themed events and competitions, awards
  • Sled Race and Sled Decoration Contest (Troop 1 is Running This Event!!!)

There is an option for older scouts to attend SERE training.

Due to the latest surge, there is a strong prefference that families drive their own scouts to/from the event. Please meet at the church for 5:30. We will caravan from the church to Camp Resolute. Please pick up your scout at Camp after 10am on Sunday.

Ultimate Obstacles

Do YOU want to be a Ninja? If so, come join Troop 1 for a fun night of ninja training at Ultimate Obstacles in West Boyslton. We'll have the run the gym after they close to the public on Saturday night. The staff will be on hand to help arrange games and contests. Or enjoy the obstacles that you might want to try out.

The cost of the trip is $35 per wanna-be Ninja. It is free if you just want to watch the fun. Meet in the gym parking lot at 6:45pm. They will let us enter at 7p,. 7pm, when the gym closes to the public. icon More Information is available in the Info Sheet

 Please note, there will be no cooking on site. So the recommendation is to eat dinner before arriving at the gym Saturday night and have some pre-packaged breakfast (Granola bar or the like) for Sunday morning.

 

Nobscot Backpacking Overnight

Troop 1 is going to practice our backpacking skills at Camp Nobscot. We will carry everything we need in our backpack, in essence living off our packs. The goal for this trip is to complete a 5-mile hike (at a minimum) in a large loop while exploring the natural features of the reservation (ideally enjoying a view from Tippling Rock or the Ridge). The hike will start shortly after we arrive at Nobscot, with a pause for lunch. We will arrive at the Owl Trail Adirondack (lean to) mid-afternoon, set-up camp and prepare for dinner and a campfire. In the morning we will prepare breakfast, set down the camp and make our way to the parking area.


Resolute Base Camp

Troop 1 is going to visit Resolute Scout Reservation on the weekend of October 23rd. We will be camping at the Cherokee site by Browning Pond on Friday through Sunday. During the day on Saturday, while working as Patrols, we'll enjoy everything that Base Camp has to offer. From Scout Skills, to Cooking, to Orienteering, to the high ropes course (as potential activities), Base Camp will have something fun for you.


Metrorock Indoor Rock Climbing

Join Troop 1 for a fun night of indoor rock climbing at Metrorock's Littleton's facility! The event is Friday starts on September 24th and we'll stay overnight until Saturday September 25th.

Adult participation is welcome and encouraged, as we will need adults to help belaying our climbers. (https://sportrock.com/the-ultimate-guide-to-belaying/).

Our reservation includes training for up to six adults!

The cost of the trip is $35/climber after a Troop subsidy. Participants that are there just to belay climbers would not pay a fee (Select pay at meeting).

Pizza is at 7pm. The adult training session starts at 7:30pm while Scouts hang out together, and the main rock climbing event starts around 9pm.
